Joel reviews the 9 Levels of Personality Type.

This framework helps you pinpoint where you are in your journey with personality — from early curiosity & labeling to deep embodiment & real-life application.

This video is part of a broader series designed to help you understand yourself and others on life’s growth journey — using personality as a map to navigate where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re headed next. It's a fresh way to see your progress and your next steps.

As you watch, consider: Where are you right now on this map?

Imagine yourself sitting in that audience at the next Profiler Training — whiteboard in view, lightbulb moments landing, mapping your own growth one level at a time.

Your mapping of levels of knowledge and use of Personality Type was helpful. I would say that I’m in levels four and five. I know my type, INFP, the best. I’ve looked at and studied the function stack of people close to me, or people that I want to understand better. I know a lot about ISTJ, because my husband is one. I know a lot about INFJ, because a close friend is one, for example. I know the most about the differences between INFP and INFJ. So, I’ve really studied what the cognitive functions of Ni vs. Ne and Fi vs Fe look like. I do know the basics of Si/Se and Ti/Te but haven’t delved as deeply into those cognitive functions. And of course, the functions play different roles with different types. Si plays a totally different role with me as Fi dom and Si tertiary. My husband as an Si dom uses that function in so many more ways than I do.

I do look at the behavior of other people I know and whose lives are important to me, and try to postulate their type. I think of it as a running theory, because, as you said…only they could really say and confirm what their type is. As an INFP, I consistently keep an open mind. I don’t put anyone in a box, not even myself. Every INFP is an individual. No two are alike. MBTI can cover just so much. Of course, I never say anything out loud to anyone about my guesses and theories. There is no one around me that is interested in type, anyway.

I’ve been following a few MBTI enthusiasts. I love watching Dario Nardi (I’m an INFP-N) I have two of his books. I have your INFP writeup. I like Matt Sherman with Geek Psychology; Harry Murrel with Cognitive Psychology; Joyce Meng’s YouTube channel and of course your site Personality Hacker.

I went to an APT conference long ago. It was great! I met Otto Kroger who wrote a number of books. It was lots of fun. I hope its gets back on it’s feet and starts putting out great conferences again. I read Keirsey’s book back at at 32 (I’m 65 now). It changed my life! I’ve been pouring myself into understanding MBTI since then. I’ve joined various forums that were around. I took a week long course to become “Certified” by CAPT. It’s supposed to be for life, because I got it a long time ago when they did that. I don’t use it anyway. I’ve had two great careers and am very interested in Profiling. That’s going quite the step beyond. Very interested in the highest level of being able to embody the “energy” of a type. I do that with my ISTJ husband. I have a pretty good ISTJ side. Had to develop a lot of that with my jobs and careers.

Thank you for this synopsis of levels; I found it helpful to understand this progression. I would say I am functioning in the middle level~4 → 6 mostly trying to master 5-mapping for myself and in my family relationships. I also enjoy your podcasts to push me further along this path.
